DIY Impeachment

Impeach Bush yourself! This is much more than just a petition.

There's a little known and rarely used clause of the in the rules for the House of Representatives which sets forth the various ways in which a president can be impeached. Only the House Judiciary Committee puts together the Articles of Impeachment, but before that happens, someone has to initiate the process.

That's where we come in. In addition to the State-byState method, one of the ways to get impeachment going is for individual citizens like you and me to submit a memorial. ImpeachforPeace.org has created a new memorial based on one which was successful in impeaching a federal official in the past. You can find it on their website as a PDF.

You can initiate the impeachment process yourself by downloading the memorial, filling in the relevant information in the blanks (your name, state, etc.), and sending it in.

More information on the precedent for submitting an impeachment
memorial, and the House Rules on this procedure, can also be found at
the above address.

If you have any doubts that Bush has committed crimes warranting
impeachment, read this page: http://ImpeachForPeace.org/evidence/

If you're concerned that impeachment might not be the best strategy
at this point, read the bottom of this page: http://ImpeachForPeace.org/

Hey thanks, I'm going to spend some time there checking it out now. It's probably more of an opportunity to just be in more trouble with these guys than for any real results to happen. But, what the hell great floods come from little drops of water.

Don't forget that it was scientifically proven that Bush knocked down the towers with microwaves from space, and Cheny used his hunting skills to take out the support beams.

Just remember, when people can't defeat your argument, they resort to Rovian spin tactics of personal attacks ("Moonbat", "Conspiracy theorists!!").

All we're asking for is accountability.

Son, I was destroying your argument before you knew what your argument was.......

Just hope you eventually grow out of your stupidity......

Again with the Rovian stuff. If you're arguments are so good, let's hear them.

Casual,

You write:

“Holding government officials accountable for their actions strengthens our democracy. Letting lawlessness stand weakens it.”

In a democracy, elections are the people’s way to hold government officials accountable. Vote the rascals out. Impeachment was intended to be a fail-safe device, used only in the rare case where the (high) crimes were so serious that the people could not wait.

(a) A note here. Obviously impeachment is only the process of charges being voted by the House of Representatives. Removal from office, which I assume is what you mean, takes both impeachment and conviction – the latter by 2/3 vote of the Senate.

Although I hold no soft feelings for our current president, neither can I find a reason that we cannot wait two more years and be rid of him in the usual manner. This is the democratic way.

For what would you “impeach” him? A contemplation? Even one so serious as you mention - the use of tactical nuclear weapons – hardly qualifies as a high crime. “Impeachment” must me made of sterner stuff.

Would you “impeach” him for deceiving us into war? Most certainly that qualifies as sterner stuff. But then we should have impeached
James K. Polk, Woodrow Wilson, LBJ and probably FDR.

Would you “impeach” him for using war as an excuse for ignoring the Bill of Rights? Again, that’s sterner stuff. But then Lincoln, too, should have gone and FDR as well.

For lying to the people? Few presidents in our history would have escaped impeachment for that “high crime.”

Please do not misunderstand me. I want a strong executive but, also, one who is responsible to the Constitution. Except in the rarest of circumstances, it is role of the people, through elective process, to check not only executive abuse of power but abuse by all elected officials.

Jim,

Let me point out three fallacies to your argument.

First: "Don't punish me, other people do it too!"
All crimes should be overseen, regardless of the president.

Second: Bush has committed an obsene number of impeachable offenses. Quite blatant:

Third: Our democratic process doesn't only include voting, it includes impeachment. Using impeachment is a part of our democratic process. And one for just such a president.

Good day.

I'm uhhh a sort of Junior Geezer and was already out of my 2 drafted army years when Impeachment Fever slimed and finally got rid of Nixon.

And then of course the (Lied about) Fellatio Impeachment.

So my American Life is pretty rich in Impeachment.

I'm assuming Pelosi is making these "Impeachment is not on the table" noises so the prospect of the House switching to a Dem majority won't frighten voters tomorrow.

Boo. I ain't afraid of no 'peachment.

One thing Bush shares with Nixon is the conviction that while he's president with a big war, he's entirely above the law; no court or congress can force anything on him ot forbid him from doing anything.

The more Nixon played that card -- his lawyer Sinclair argued before the Supreme Court that while he's president, a president has the same powers as Louis XV -- the more it outraged ordinary Americans, and even members of Congress of Nixon's own party. That's when a president falls -- when he loses his popular support and loses all his powerful friends and political support.

I am somewhat concerned that in the last decade as partisan politics becomes harsher and more ferocious, every president from Clinton on will face a serious impeachment initiative -- i.e., impeachment will become the norm of the presidency, not the aberration. The Clinton impeachment reeked of the Revenge of the Young Republicans, now grown up and still bitter about Nixon's fall.

Until it blows up in your face and pisses off the voters, Impeachment just tastes delicious to all partisans, Dems and Republicans alike.

Still, this creep has to go, and Impeachment is the obvious Constitutional remedy.

Thanks for all the kewl stuph about impeachment on your site, I'll be reading it carefully. I had such a wonderful time watching Nixon resign and fly off in the Marine helicopter. It was just sooooo satisfying.

I have no fear of the impeachment process. No more than the fear of murder prosecutions. I think every president should have a healthy fear of it. I say, let's use it on every president who thwarts the constitution until they realize they can't get away with it.

Oh, the "moonbat" complaints and insults ...

Nixon had tons of blind worshippers just like that, just as nasty. Agnew was really the best example. The nastier and more meanspirited they were, the more Patriotic they felt.

Two things happen with people like that. First, they increasingly feel justified about breaking the law -- to Save Our Nation. And that sets every one of them up for federal prosecution and hancuffs and prison. So they're Self-Destructing.

Second -- it will be just swell to watch them all go ballistic and froth at the mouth as the Bush impeachment picks up steam and starts holding hearings and televising interesting testimony. Nothing any of them can do to stop the Impeachment and Save Bush once the juggernaut starts rolling.
